Selfie Saturdays Week 5: Idea Selfies

INCORPORATING AN IDEA INTO A SELFIE

Ok, let’s admit it, girls! At some point simply taking pretty pictures of yourselves becomes boring. I mean how many times can you really show off your pretty face or your cute outfit?

That’s when some of us transition into something more creative. Themed Selfie.
And not the type where if the theme is a tree and you take a picture by the tree, or a house and you take a picture by the house. You gotta make it fun right?

Nothing is off limits: costumes, flashlights, outdoors. Just get creative. To give you a few examples of what you can do with themes, here’s what I did back when I was very heavy into a self portrait Flickr group, FGR, that gave a theme each day that we were supposed to shoot. It was one of the best tools I could have been given in improving in photography and self-portraiture.

A few examples to get you started, after which I will give you two options for the themes you can take:

Theme: Luggage

{ this is a very simple execution: luggage, clothing, hangers. If you’re going to use the obvious object of the theme make sure it’s surrounded by more interesting items. Another great shot would have been a person curled up in a suitcase }

Theme: Sun and Hands

{That’s a simple selfie, but it reminds you that you can always use parts of your body instead of your face to add interest to the photo }

Theme: Depression

THEME: Sparkle

{ If you take the theme literally, go out of your way to saturate your photo with it }

THEME: Hit the Road

{ Think outside the box }

THEME: Spring

{ Sometimes all you need is to evoke a feeling or an emotion from your photograph of the theme. It might take a few shots to get your point across. Use a diptych. }

THEME: Invasion

{ Sometimes you need to get a little silly }

THEME: Adorkable

{ or even sillier }

THEME: Movie Poster

{ The best images are usually the ones you put the most work and thought into. Don’t be afraid to execute a great idea even if it means buying a real sword and digging up your Kill Bill costume :) }

I realise that it is not much of a tutorial, but I was thinking all week about the advice I could give you about executing themes and there is none. It’s all about your creativity and thought process as well as availability of time. Take a week to think over the themes I will give you. Let the idea come to you.
Enlist your family members. My husband helped me come up with some of the greatest ideas for my daily selfie themes I was given. Just let them know about your assignment and see if they can come up with something for you.
Use this week to approach photography, not from the photography stand point, but from a creation standpoint. An idea that you will be composing, creating and executing. It’s not about beauty of things this week, it’s about an interesting, original creative interpretation.

So you have two options this week. Feel free to take any one you want.

Option 1 {easy}: Let’s take today’s FGR challenge topic: Capture Your Inner Child.

I figured it would be easy for most of you to come with fun creative ideas, because most of you have kids, which means you have the props, but you are parents so most of the time you behave like adults. Time to change that at least for an hour. Those who don’t have kids have a funner job of expressing it in a different way! I could give suggestions, but I want to see what you come up with.

Option 2 {more challenging}: Dance Partey

Don’t forget to get a little more into details. Break out a disko ball and lights, put on some fun outfit. Make it believable!
{I had to change the second theme, because I realized it might be too challenging for most of you right now and the last thing we want is to be intimidated by the challenge and not do it.}

I am so excited to see what kind of ideas you come up with! You have a whole week to come up with an awesome fun concept and shoot it! Release your creativity!

Next week ( if I am recovered from my wisdom teeth surgery enough to make a video) I will attempt to explain how to make “special” model look with your eyes that you will soon be recognizing in all the magazines you look at.

LINK UP HERE if you finish your shot before Saturday or come back on Saturday for a special Link up post.
