Christmas Card Photos
Oh I haven’t been here for a while!
I am not abandoning this blog- definitely NOT! But the last few months of pregnancy demanded a lot of planning and attention that I simply had to pick between a photography blog and a pregnancy blog. Obviously the latter won!
But once we have our new baby and our new routine and I figure it all out, I’ll be right back here hosting Selfie Saturdays and posting adorable photos of Lexi and me and hubby and friends and everything that is going on. This will not be a blog about my life, though. You can read about my life on The Art of Making a Baby. This will be a blog dedicated to beauty and magic and light and photography and creativity. This won’t be a blog of day-to-day photography, but of special moments.
So the reason why I am posting here right now ( besides to give you an update for why I am missing from Selfie Magic) is because I finally took a few self-portraits worth of being displayed on this blog: Our Christmas Photos.
As most of you know, sometimes self-portraits are all about HIT-OR-MISS. This was definitely starting out as a MISS. Both of us weren’t in the mood, we were loosing light, business calls kept coming in in the middle of the shoot. BUT we did pick an amazing location, we managed to look acceptable and somewhat Christmasy and were in the kind of state of mind where we couldn’t care less about anything- it just needed to be done.
The cards went out right on time and this was officially our first Christmas card as the three of us. It was even more special to send out these cards to my friends in Europe and family in Russia.
So here are the photos themselves, all taken with a tripod and a remote, using my 50mm.
{I’m 34 weeks pregnant in these}
This is why I love knowing how to take self-portraits- being able to take family photos without hiring a photog or hassling a friend.

Love these!
Do you photoshop your remote out in these, or are you just hiding it really well?
I’m practiced at hiding it
I think you can see the remote showing in a few of these.
help me out!
Where is it in the third to last photo?
Probably in the other hand. I can’t see it in the visible hand. Though it’s possible I flattened it out between my palm and his. Looked at the other pics in the same pose- can’t see it, so must be the opposite hand.
Thanks! You should do a video of a self-shoot so we can see how you set things up like that!
I think I did a tutorial or two on family portraits and focusing with the remote. Hiding the remote isn’t really that hard, just put it in the hand that will be furthest from the camera ( or throw it on the ground, but that’s a pain in the butt since then you have to lean down to get it each time. Sometimes that’s the only way to do it though). It’s just there’s so much going on in a self-portrait shoot and so much to think of, I space out sometimes and don’t hide it well.
Girl, you take such awesome self-portraits you wouldn’t ever need to hire a photographer! These are so gorgeous, vibrant, sharp and eye catching. I LOVE how your card turned out too! Gorgeous! I also think it is so awesome that your hubby is so supportive of your photography passion and that he is photogenic and happy to pose for pics all the time. Such a cute family you three make:) Happy new year! Hey what do you use to do your vertical shots on your tripod?? Do you have a vertical mount?
The tripod I have has the head that just flips down and rotates the camera. Actually all tripods I’ve had have this option- i think it’s standard.
These turned out absolutely gorgeous – I’m loving that red dress. I’m thinking we’re going to have to join each other’s card distribution just so I can get my hands on a card this gorgeous. HEHE
Ummm yeah definitely!
I can see the camera remote in your hand. Nice work.
beautiful!
These came out so lovely Elena- not that I am surprised. You do great work!!! So excited for Lexi to be here soon- exciting times for you!!!!
Still looking fabulous at 34 weeks. And what beautiful family selfies! Some day when I get more time to play with my camera, I have to mess around with getting the selfie setup just right. As for all of the comments above asking about the remote… if you set it to a 2 sec delay, you can signal the camera then hide it by turning your hand. =)
Hi! I have been a follower for a little while but don’t comment to often but I have to ask, were these taken in Ave? I absolutely love them all!
Yes, they were
Thank you!
How did you make the cards? yourself or some service? Please advice
thank you
I used bay photo labs for printing of the cards
Great photos! I do have a question though if you don’t mind me asking. So you took these photos with your tripod and camera in a public location? Did you feel self conscious, or were people staring? Just curious because I run a blog and feel so bizare taking self portraits, I’m afraid of people’s thoughts I guess.
Haha, well let’s just say I care very little what other people think
I used to be “a little bit” self-concious about taking photos like this in public. With practice it got better. Then I got into modeling, and it squashed any fears of publicly taking photos forever.
I do sometimes get a twinge of fear, but I brush it away. Who cares what people think? I am not doing it for them, and I’ll never see them again.
Oh and people generally don’t really stare.
Oh, in case you were wondering.. http://lepetitmondealyssa.blogspot.com lol!
